United Nations Declaration
on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday September 13, by a a majority of 144 states in favour, 4 votes against (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States) and 11 abstentions (Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burundi, Colombia, Georgia, Kenya, Nigeria, Russian Federation, Samoa and Ukraine).
"...control by indigenous peoples over developments affecting them and their lands, territories and resources will enable them to maintain and strengthen their institutions, cultures and tra- ditions, and to promote their development in accordance with their aspirations and needs..."
"...indigenous peoples have suffered from historic injus- tices as a result of, inter alia, their colonization and dispossession of their lands, territories and resources, thus preventing them from exercising, in particular, their right to development in accordance with their own needs and interests..."
